Insadong Garlic Bossam : Genuine garlic bossam place in Jongno

I wanted a proper Korean dinner in Insadong, not just another tourist-friendly set menu, so I met a friend at this tiny garlic bossam place that locals actually wait for. We even had a reservation at 5 pm right after their break time, but when we arrived around 4:50, there was already a line outside. That’s when I knew this was a real “you have to wait” kind of spot.
---
Exterior
The restaurant is tucked inside one of the side alleys off the main Insadong street. You walk past the busy tourist shops, then suddenly it gets quieter and more local.
Outside the shop there’s a little sign asking people in line not to block the entrance of the shop next door. That sign alone tells you everything – they are used to long lines.
---
Interior
Inside, there’s a cozy shoes-off section in the back. You leave your shoes at the entrance of that area and step up onto the wooden floor. The ceiling has a traditional hanok-style vibe, so it feels warm and a bit hidden away from the busy street.
There are only about three tables in that inner room. While we were eating, one table was a foreign couple, another table had a woman who looked like a fortune-teller type, all mixed together. It felt like a funny little “world gathering” in this tiny room.

Menu We Ordered
We didn’t go crazy with alcohol this time because my friend wasn’t in the mood to drink, so we focused on the food:
- Garlic bossam (boiled pork with ground garlic sauce)
- White whelk (non-spicy “baek golbaengi”) with somyeon noodles
- Warm tofu
- Side dishes, including stir-fried kimchi
I actually really wanted soju with this, but since my friend said no, it turned into a pure “anju feast” without alcohol.

Food Review
Garlic Bossam
The bossam here comes with a mound of ground garlic that you dip the meat into. I love garlic, so this was totally my style. The pork itself is basic in a good way, soft and not too fatty, but when you hit it with that garlic, it suddenly becomes addictive. If you’re not into strong garlic, this might be a bit much, but for garlic people, it’s heaven.
White Whelk with Somyeon
This was the surprise star for me. Usually whelk dishes in Korea are spicy with red sauce, but this one is “white” style, so no red chili paste. You mix the whelk with the thin somyeon noodles and it’s not spicy at all, just really clean and savory. I had honestly never seen this style before, and it ended up being my favorite dish of the night.
Warm Tofu
The tofu came out last, and it was a bit of a wait. I think the orders got mixed up with the table next to us, because they sat down later but got their tofu earlier. We were watching their table like, “Where is ours?” When it finally arrived, it was a big, warm block of tofu, soft and comforting. Simple, but it really works with bossam and kimchi.
Side Dishes
The stir-fried kimchi they gave as banchan was so good we asked for a refill. Slightly oily, nicely sour, perfect with the pork. Nothing fancy, just very “Korean home food” style, which I actually like more than over-complicated sides.

Atmosphere & Experience
By the time we finished eating and got up to leave, the entire place was completely full. Every table taken, people still waiting outside. It’s definitely not a big restaurant, so once a few groups sit down, the wait gets long.
The vibe is very local: not super polished, but warm, slightly cramped, and you can hear bits of different languages from tourists who somehow found the place. Service was a little slow with the tofu mix-up, but not in a rude way, just busy.

Final Thoughts
If you’re in Insadong and want something more local than the usual tourist hanjeongsik, this garlic bossam place is a solid choice. The space is tiny but cozy, the garlic bossam is satisfying, and the white whelk with noodles is something you probably haven’t tried before.
Just be ready to wait, or do what I recommend: go right at opening time or right after their 5 pm re-opening. For a small, homey bossam dinner in the middle of Insadong, I’d say it’s worth the line.
